TripleInk VP volunteers as ski instructor for disabled veterans
April 17, 2019
At the end of March, Uta Moncur, our VP of Strategic Operations & Localization Services, had the opportunity to volunteer at the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass, Colorado, as a ski instructor.
The week-long annual event brings together hundreds of veterans and instructors from across the nation. Participants range from the barely 20-year-old combat-wounded man with a traumatic brain injury to the spritely 80-year-old with a degenerative visual impairment who decided he is not too old to learn something new. They hit the slopes assisted by 1-3 dedicated instructors and adaptive devices best suited for their specific abilities and needs, such as bamboo poles, outriggers, tethers, snow-sliders, mono-skis or bi-skis.
“There isn’t enough time in a day to tell you about all the ways that make this event so special for every one of us,” says Uta as she tries to recap the week. “The camaraderie and energy amongst participants and volunteers are unparalleled. It is amazing what these folks have experienced and how they have chosen to recover and continue to enjoy life to the fullest. Year after year, every participant I meet has a special story of challenges and the grit to overcome them. I am honored to play a part in their physical and mental recovery process.”
Uta is a winter sports enthusiast who learned to ski in the Swiss Alps when she was only 2½ years old. She has volunteered as a ski instructor for the Twin Cities Courage Kenny Ski & Snowboard Program since 2003. This was her eleventh year at the Winter Sports Clinic and she confirms that it won’t be her last!
